Tony, it might be recognising your xbox controller over your steam controller, try removing all controls snd plug the steam controller in after its booted up and not before, the pc doesnt see it has a joystic but more like a keyboard mouse hence it works with nearly any game. have you gone into devices and properties to see if it moves and makes signals. ill look on line see if i can help sort it.
